Stay Gold

Stay Gold This book report was done for S.E. Hinton's novel, THE OUTSIDERS. In my essay, I explore the quote, "stay gold" and it's meaning. I used a poem that was in the novel to express this topic (the poem is by Robert Frost). What it basically is about is the cycle of life.Title: "Stay Gold"I have just recently completed reading S.E. Hinton's novel, The Outsiders. The author raises many topics faced by the teenagers of her time. Issues such as peer pressure, violence and family problems faced by the youngsters still apply to the teenagers of today. In the book, Johnny, one of the central characters draws the reader's attention to a poem. In a letter written by the dying Johnny to Ponyboy, he advises his friend to continue to (pg 154) "dig sunsets That's gold. Keep that way, it's a good way to be" In this essay, I will be concentrating on the quote "stay gold" and its meaning.Banana BookThis quote was taken from a poem written by Robert Frost which Ponyboy had trouble figuring out its meanin g. To me, the poem appears to be comparing our youthful years as being as valuable as gold. We are to enjoy our time when we are young for it is the "hardest hue to hold" on to. It is also saying that our childhood years are very short and feels like "but only so an hour" As we grow older, our garden of "Eden sank to grief" The beginning of our life will quickly end as "dawn goes down to day" So in the end "nothing gold can stay" which refers to the end of our innocence. (All quotes taken from pg69)In the book Johnny also comes up with his interpretation of the poem. "you're gold...

3 Easy Ways to Set Ice on Fire

3 Easy Ways to Set Ice on Fire Have you ever wondered whether you could set ice on fire? These are instructions for how to make ice appear to burn and also instructions so that you can actually set it on fire. Making Ice Appear to Be on Fire Most of the photos you might see of burning ice were probably made using Photoshop, but you can get the appearance of burning ice very easily without resorting to image processing tricks. Get some glass cubes (craft stores carry them), set them on a surface that can withstand fire (metal pan, Pyrex, stoneware), pour something flammable over the ice, and set it alight. You can use 151 rum (ethanol), rubbing alcohol (try for 90% isopropyl alcohol, not the 70% alcohol stuff), or methanol (Heetâ„ ¢ fuel treatment from the automotive section of a store). These easy-to-obtain fuels burn cleanly, so they wont set off your smoke alarm (I know... I tried). If you want colored flames, you can add any of the usual flame colorants to the ethanol or rubbing alcohol. If you use methanol, try adding a little boric acid for a brilliant green flame. Use caution with methanol, since it burns very hot. One little display tip: You can give glass cubes the imperfect, crackled appearance of water ice b y setting one on fire and then tossing it (with tongs) into water after the fire goes out. The glass may shatter, but if you have the temperature just right youll just create internal fractures that look very pretty in photographs. Flaming Ice I basically told you how to set ice on fire when I explained how to make a flaming B-52 drink. High-proof ethanol (like 151 rum) or 90% isopropyl alcohol will float on the surface of water and mix with it so that as long as there is fuel, your ice will appear to burn. As the ice melts, it will extinguish the flame (methanol is highly toxic too). You can use ethanol on ice used for human consumption (or flaming ice cream drinks). Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) and methanol are toxic and should only be used for decorative purposes. Really Burning the Ice You may be thinking it is impossible to burn ice. Strictly speaking, that is not true. You can burn ice, just not water ice. If you make ice cubes from any of the alcohols I have listed, you can burn them. For pure alcohol ice cubes, youll need a way to freeze the liquid down to about -100Â °C, give or take a few degrees depending on the specific alcohol. You dont need to get quite that cold for 75% alcohol/25% water ice, which will burn if you spritz it with a little liquid alcohol to get flammable vapor over the ice. You may be able to freeze the 75% solution over dry ice. Flaming Ice Safety Just remember two things: (1) If you want to ingest the flaming ice, only use food-grade ethanol, not some other fuel. (2) Methanol burns very, very hot! You can get away with using almost any surface if you use ethanol or isopropanol. You can even touch the flame briefly. However, the risk of getting burned or of your fire getting out of control are much higher using methanol because it produces so much heat. Is It Possible to Burn Water? The reason water is used to extinguish flames is because it has such a high heat capacity. Technically, you cant burn water because combustion is an oxidation process. In a sense, water is the product of the combustion of hydrogen. However, if you pass a sufficiently strong electrical current through water, it decomposes into its elements. The hydrogen gas is flammable, while the oxygen gas supports its combustion. If you have a flame or ignition source at the point of electrolysis, water will appear to burn. So, it follows you could make real water ice appear to burn. For this to occur, the ice would need to be floating in some liquid water. Electrolysis of the water to produce hydrogen and oxygen would yield flammable gas above the ice. Igniting the gas would make the ice appear to burn. Note this is a theoretical method of burning ice, not one youd want to try in a school science lab! Its much safer to burn hydrogen from electrolysis in bubbles or balloons than in the open. The Communication Process Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Communication Process - Essay Example In this paper, I will explain the model of the communication process and describe its development and related variables that affect it. The Communication Process There are numerous definitions to the communication process. But one of the most excellent descriptions that capture its essence is that one provided by Reddy (2004). He explained that the process â€Å"involves the sender, the transmission of a message through a selected channel and the receiver† (14). The definition can be illustrated in the following figure: Fig. 1: The Communication Process What this means is that the process may involved the exchange of messages through speaking, signals, writing or behavior and may occur either as verbal or nonverbal (Marquis and Huston 2009, 443). According to Steinberg, there are three basic models of the communication process, emphasizing different aspects of communication and these are: linear, circular and transactional (Steinberg 2006, 17). Fundamentally, there are four el ements involved, which must play their respective parts and interact in order for the process to be completed and become successful. These are the sender, the message, the channel or medium and the receiver. The sender initiates the process by encoding or expressing his or her thoughts or ideas in such a way that they will be understood by the intended receiver of the message. The codified or expressed thought is now the message, which, for its part, is conveyed or transmitted through a channel. This variable is the platform used for the message and effectively links the sender and the receiver in the process. For example, if the message is written, the channel may be a letter through the post or through the email using a computer. The receiver then receives the message and decodes it into his or her thoughts. After which, a message would then be conveyed in response, which is identified in the process as the feedback. Noise Noise is an element in the communication process. But unli ke the other four, it is not an integral component, required to make the process complete or effective. This is because noise hampers communication. It affects the process negatively and could muddle a message so that it is not interpreted correctly or never understood at all. Noise can literally be sound interference but it generally refers to the variables that disrupt the exchange of messages. For example, it can be the faulty encoding or decoding, personal biases of the people involved or their focus in the process, strong emotions such as fear and a host of other tangible and intangible variables. Feedback The significance of feedback, which is the final step in the process, rests on the fact that it is the only barometer to determine whether the process has been completed and effective. It tells the sender of the message that the conveyed information was successfully received and decoded. Feedbacks assume many forms and may not resemble the nature of the message received. For example, a girl giggles after I told her that she is beautiful. The giggle is the feedback. Feedback also provides the mechanism to determine the nature of the noise involved and to correct the faulty process. Also, feedback may also suffer from the same noise by which a

Discourse analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Discourse analysis - Essay Example The essay concentrates on scout since she is a key character as well as portraying the author when she was young as well as when she grew up and came to understand the various things that were different for her to understand when she was young. Prejudice is defined as an opinion on an individual that is usually based solely on religion or race before even all the facts are known (Johnson 1994). This essay will seek to explain the various instances of prejudice that are shown in the book especially those that touch on Tom Robinson, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch since they are the key characters in the book. I will also have a look at aunt Alexandria and her role in the book. She was introduced in the story as a defender of the tried and tested status quo in the southern society that the book was set in. The novel I used to work on this essay has no published Coda. The discourse analysis is on Lee Harper’s To Kill a Mockingbird hence this will be the principle form of literature in this narrative. The other books played a mostly supplementary role to this book. I also intend to make use of Understanding to Kill a Mockingbird: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historic Documents. This will be of help to me since it pinpoints the main issues in the novel such as racism and prejudice which are the main topics of the narrative. This makes it much easier to understand and critique where necessary as I read along. Zakrzweski Janelle’s Reading Race: Exploring Racial Themes in to Kill a Mockingbird will also be particularly useful since race is the most critical issue in this book as it was written in the thick of the civil rights movement in the south. The book resonated with the prevailing mood in the society. The study of identity plays a significant role in modern sociological thought. I had to come up with the various ident ities in the narrative and this was helped by going through Karen Cerulo’s essay titled Identity Construction: New

Retail Marketing (Britain hypermarket net Tesco) Essay

Retail Marketing (Britain hypermarket net Tesco) - Essay Example In the beginning of 1990th Tesco took up the small category of retail market for lower-income customers. More expensive line for well-off customers was concerned with J. Sainsbury and Waitrose. Comfortable location, competitive prices, polite staff, great variety of goods and products, mainly, circumspect development strategy helped Tesco to become a really national shop. It has happened neither due to only British goods are sold nor due to the state authorities discrimination of American "Wal Mart" or French "Carrefour. National brand buildup took place thanks to Tesco owners and managers, who understood British customers wishes, whims and the mechanism of decision making. It became possible after using Management Information System (MIS). Tesco set close cooperation with University College London. The scientists offered new methods of gathering, checking, collating, review, storage, access, retrieval and update of statistics information of retail sells. Fed every second by Tesco's 12 million Clubcard holders, the Crucible database could in theory generate about 12 billion pieces of data a year if each cardholder bought just 20 items a week. This information is analyzed very attentively. MIS helps managers to understand what goods are sold better together, to place them accordingly on the counters in supermarkets. Experts, who carry out such analysis for Tesco, insist that the company has one of the biggest customer databases in the world. At first, hypermarket provides constant (season, holiday, single) discounts for that goods and stuffs, which customer buys oftener then others. At the end of a quarter each Clubcard holder gets voucher, equivalent to sum total, he spent in Tesco hypermarkets. Additionally they are rewarded with coupons, which allow discounts to that goods, the customers can enjoy (according to MIS results). Surely, this generated information is based on purchase data analysis. 2. MARKETING CONCEPTS ROLE Management Information System (relevant module) defines the consumer goods basket, which can be potentially interested to a customer. During the quarter Tesco sells about 6 million letters with propositions of different discounts to loyal clients. Also Tesco MIS provides detailed sells information, which allows placing the goods on the counters according to consumers' tastes in each particular region or even in dependence of daytime. In the morning customers buy one stuffs, in the evening - another. Tesco shops in the center of London differ greatly from the little out-of-the-way ones. Other MIS module takes into account ethnic and demographic factors, fashion and even the contents of TV programs. Can you imagine customer joy and pleasure, who feels such a great attention and care from a huge hypermarket This feeling is likely to that when your relative, living far from you, one day brings you wonderful gifts, which you wished for but tell nobody about. Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco manager confirms that Tesco is a mirror, which reflects customers' tastes and wishes. Actually, hypermarket role is not so passive exactly thanks to multifunction MIS. Experts firmly consider that Tesco influence not only the manufacturing but also the "consumer-manufacturer" relationships. Retail cards system presents a unique information gathering methodology. This is

Earthquake Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Earthquake Paper - Essay Example The earthquake was marked by a thrust-faulting focal mechanism which saw the subduction of the Nazca plate underneath the South American Tectonic Plates (USGS, 2010). For Haiti, the earthquake occurred at the northern boundary of the Caribbean tectonic plate which shifts eastwards per year in relation to the North American Plate (Amos, 2010). The depth of focus for the Japan earthquake was 32 kilometers, for the Haiti earthquake, it was 13 kilometers, and for the Chile earthquake, it was 35 kilometers. The tsunami which followed the Japan earthquake caused a greater damage than the earthquake itself. The earthquake caused a 5-8 meter upthrust in a 180-km seabed offshore from the coast of Tohoku which then caused the tsunami which devastated Japan’s northern islands and the Pacific coastline (CNN Wire Staff, 2011). The tsunami extended across the Pacific with warnings issued to coastal towns. Chile, which was the furthest area from Japan still felt tsunami waves 2 meters high. In the Omoe peninsula, Miyako city, and the Iwate prefecture, tsunami waves were also felt (Yomiuri Shimbun, 2011). The height of the tsunamis hitting Japan ranged from as low as three meters to as high as 13 meters, covering about 560 square kilometers of Japan, and the waves were seen an hour after the earthquake hit first in Sendai airport and in the rest of the northern coast of Japan following (CNN Wire Staff, 2011). A four meter tsunami would also hit the Iwate prefecture and the Wakabayashi Ward in Sendai. A major part of Kuji and Ofunato were destroyed and in Rikuzentakata, tsunami waves were reported at about three stories high (CNN Wire Staff). Damages in the cities of Kamaishi, Miyako, Yamada, Namie, Soma, Minamisoma, Shichigahama, among others were also reported. The most severe impact of the tsunami was felt along the coastline stretching from Erimo to Oarai with bridges washed out and a wide swath of general destruction (CNN
